There are the 15 Indonesia’s Biggest Palm Oil Companies in 2018.  As the biggest producer of Palm Oil Commodity, of course, there are some giants with billion-dollar assets and generated income. This rank based on the annual report of the respective company in 2018. These companies are listed companies in Indonesia Stock Markets (IDX). So, here, we just discuss palm oil companies that are listed in Indonesian Stock Market so the financial condition and performance can be analyzed in their annual report. The Closed Palm Oil corporation can’t give permission the access annual reports so In this case, we just download 2018 the annual report. Afterward, it would be analyzed and compared to one another.

1.Astra Agro Lestari (AALI)


This company was doing business in the cassava and rubber agroindustry and began to enter the world of oil palm in 1984 by opening its farms in the Riau Province, Sumatera Island. From time to time, along with business development, the total land area has also gotten increase stretched across Riau, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi. The total area of oil palm in 2019 was around 286,877 hectares. Of this area, 217,328 hectares are nucleus estates (land cultivated by Company itself) and 69,549 hectares are plasma plantations with a partnership between the company and a local farmer. As they developing their business, this company has also started to develop an oil palm plantation system that is integrated with cattle farming and has been running since 2016. To cut down on production costs, the company has also started to build an NPK Fertilizer processing plant so that fertilizer output can be supplied directly from the factory to crops. In terms of marketing its products, the company has also exported its palm oil processing products to various countries in the world such as China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, the Philippines, and South Korea. In 2018, this company generated revenue up to 1,3 billion US Dollars ($) with profits earned by 102,7 million US Dollars ($).

2.Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology (SMART)

This company was founded in 1962 and be part of the Sinar Mas Group which founded by Eka Tjipta Wijaya. Until 2018, this company managed about 137,372 hectares of land for oil palm with a percentage of 106,428 hectares were cultivated by the company itself and the remain of 31,304 hectares were plasma lands, a partnership with local farmers. In its processing part, this company builds the plant with a capacity of 2.9 million tons per year. In relation to downstream products, there are several processed palm oil products that are sold in Indonesia such as Filma and Kunci Mas cooking oil brand, vegetable fat i.e. the Palm Vita brand, and fat products such as Menara. In addition to meeting domestic consumption, this company also exports its products to various countries such as European countries, China, India, Pakistan, Middle East, African countries, and the United States.

3.Dharma Satya Nusantara

The company was founded on September 29, 1980, with a focus on the timber industry in the beginning time. Until 1996, they started expansion by entering the palm oil business. Along with the company’s business, the plantation area has reached 112,450 hectares with 84,556 hectares of which are nuclear land and the rest is plasma land with farmers. Under the holding of the Triputra Group, this company has grown and become an important player in the world of palm oil. Financially in 2018, this company recorded a positive performance. The earned revenue was 340 million US Dollars ($) and the net profit reached 30 million US Dollars ($).


4.London Sumatra Plantation


This company is one of the leading palm oil companies and has a lot of experience in Indonesia. Founded in 1906 by a British company i.e. Harrison & Crossfield, the company has grown rapidly to become a major player in the world of palm oil. Apart from oil palm, the company also has diverse businesses in cocoa and rubber plantations. Until 2018, the total plantation area was 115,665 hectares, of which 95,637 hectares were planted by palm oil, 15,945 hectares were planted rubber, and 4,083 hectares were planted by cocoa and tea.
Di tahun 2007, Perusahaan kelapa sawit milik Salim (Group Indofood) melalui anak usahanya yakni Salim Ivomas Pratama mengambil ahlih Sebagian besar saham perusahaan ini. Semenjak tahun 2007 hingga sekarang, Lonsum masuk dalam anak usaha group Salim.Di tahun 2019, Perusahaan ini menunjukkan kinerja yang positif. Pendapatan yang dihasilkannya mencapai 3,6 triliun dan laba bersihnya menccapai 252 milyar rupiah.

In 2007, the oil palm company was taken over by Salim (Indofood Group) through its subsidiary, Salim Ivomas Pratama, which took over most of the shares of this company. By that time, London Sumatra has been a subsidiary company of the Salim group. In 2018, the company has shown positive performance. The income it generates reaches 287 million US Dollars ($) and the net profit reaches 23,6 million US Dollars ($).


5.Sawit Sumberamas Sarana


This company manages its own area of 93,660 hectares and plasma of 22,862 hectares, which is headquartered in the Pangkalan Bun, Central Kalimantan. Oil palm production in 2018 reached 1,521,602 tonnes of Fresh Fruit. The downstream products from this company are also widely exported to various countries such as China, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. In terms of ownership structure, this company is still under the part of Citra Borneo Indah. In 2019, this company recorded revenue and net profit of 265 million US Dollars ($) and 6,2 million US Dollar ($), respectively.

6.Mahkota Group


This company started its business in 2002 in the oil palm processing industry and headquartered in Medan, North Sumatra. In its business unit, the company focuses on Crude Palm Oil (CPO), Palm Kernel, and Logistics. In 2018, its total CPO production reached 213 million kilos, recording a net revenue of 142 million US Dollars ($) and a profit of 6 million US Dollars ($).


7.Sampoerna Agro


This company is owned by the Sampoerna family, which was founded in 1993 with 84,300 hectares of land and most of its plantation areas located in Kalimantan. In 2018, the company’s revenue reached 229 million US Dollars ($) with a net profit of up to 4 million US Dollars ($). The production of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB) reached 1.83 million tons with a CPO production volume reaching 385,000 tons.


8.Andira Agro


This company was founded on April 28, 1995, under the shareholders of PT. Meta Epsi (67.88%) and PT. Anugerah Perkasa Semesta (32.12%). In 2018, this company listed its shares on the Indonesia Stock Exchange. In relation to its cultivated area, the location of the company’s plantations is around the South Sumatra region. Until 2018, based on its annual report, the oil palm plantation area reached ± 10,000 hectares and its financial performance has shown positive results with revenue of 21,4 million US Dollar($) and net profit of 1,2 million US Dollar($).


9.Austindo Nusantara Jaya


The company was founded in 1993 and currently has 153,000 hectares of oil palm land spread across West Kalimantan, Papua, Belitung, and North Sumatra. In 2018, its performance showed unsatisfactory results by recording a loss of 0,3 million US Dollars ($) however earning the revenue of 151 million US Dollars ($).

10.Salim Ivomas Pratama


The company was founded in 1992 and has been a major player in the upstream and downstream oil palm plantations. The area of oil palm land until 2018 reaches 251,112 hectares. In the downstream business, the company has 26 palm oil mills in Sumatra and Kalimantan with a total processing capacity of 6.8 million tonnes of Fresh Fruit Bunches per year. Its processed palm oil products have also been widely sold in the market with brands namely Bimoli cooking oil, Margarine Palmia. In 2018, its financial performance showed unsatisfactory results. The company recorded a net loss of 5,5 million US Dollars ($) even though it received revenues of 1,013 million US Dollars ($).
