These countries have more production of safflower oil than other countries. Overall, the world’s production of Safflower oil in 2019 was around 76,848 tonnes.

Based on the Biological taxonomy, Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) can be classified into Order: Asterales; Family: Asteraceae; Genus: Carthamus; Species: Carthamus tinctorium. Historically, this species is one of the oldest cultivated crops. Agronomically, Safflower is more resistant to drought than sorghum and wheat because this species has an extensive and deep root organ.

 It was first cultivated in Mesopotamia since 2500 BC. Nowadays, Safflowers oil is one of the derivative products from Safflower seeds commonly used as frying cooking oil. In healthy aspects, the Safflowers oil can be used for cosmetics due to high content of vitamin E in this oil can prevent free radical exposure contact to our skin.

1.United States of America        

The United States of America still became the biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database in 2022, the production of Safflower Oil from The United States of America reached 29,186 tonnes. Geographically, there are some states that became the major area of production of Safflower. California contributes the highest safflower than other states. North Dakota and Montana are also the next major areas of commercial production. In the other harvested area but in small production, South Dakota, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, and Nebraska states contributes to small production output to national safflower.

2.Mexico           

Mexico is the 2nd biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. The production of Mexico’s Safflower oil in 2019 reached 10,034 tonnes. Geographically, in this country, Northwestern region of Mexico is the region of safflower cultivation. Mexico’s Safflower has some bad decreased production because of the infestation of Ramularia carthami, a fungus that can be identified in Spot leaf of Safflower. In the beginning of 2000’s, this pathogen can reduce the production of Safflower seed until 70%.

3.Argentina      

Argentina is the 3rd biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. The production of Argentina’s Safflower oil in 2019 reached 8,440 tonnes. Geographically, the cultivation of safflower in Argentina is in Salta, Santiago del Estero, and Chaco provinces.

4.India 

India is the 4th biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. Statistically, the production of India’s Safflower Oil reached 7,000 tonnes. Geographically, in India, there are some states that contribute more safflower seeds to India. These states are Maharashtra and Karnataka. These 2 states contribute more than 60% of India’s Safflower seed.

5.Kazakhstan   

Kazakhstan is the 5th biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. Statistically, the production of Safflower Oil from Kazakhstan reached 6,042 tonnes. In this country, more than 200 thousand hectares may be used for the Cultivation of Safflower.

6.Kyrgyzstan     

Kyrgyzstan is the 6th biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. Statistically, the production of Safflower Oil from Kyrgyzstan reached 5,115 tonnes. Geograpically, in Kyrgyzstan, the Naryn oblast Region is one of the planted regions of Safflower cultivation.

7.Uzbekistan    

Uzbekistan is the 7th biggest producer of Safflower Oil in 2019. Statistically, the production of Safflower Oil from Uzbekistan reached 2,720 tonnes. Geographically, Gallaorol and Milyutinsky are some of the regions that has the suitability for Safflower cultivation.

8.Ethiopia         

Ethiopia is the 8th biggest producer of Safflower oil in 2019. Statistically, the production of Safflower Oil reached 2,038 tonnes. Geographically, the Amhara region is one of the cultivation areas of Safflower in Ethiopia.
