So far, coffee beans, which are mostly processed into various beverages for humans, have become an important commodity in the agricultural world. The culture of drinking coffee has been going on for a long time and continues to exist and last for generations has had a positive impact in increasing the prestige and selling value of this plant commodity.

Coffee plants are included in the Rubiaceae plant family so that they still have close relationship with quinine (Chinchona Sp) and Noni (Morinda citrifolia). According to plant species, there are several popular types of coffee, namely Robusta coffee (Coffea canephora), Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), and liberika coffee (Coffea liberica). The number of requests for coffee drinks is increasing often with population growth. Many countries have cultivated this plant. Statistically, in 2022, the world’s production of coffee beans reached 10.7 million tons with harvested areas of around 12.2 million hectares. Basically, from time to time, the production and harvested areas of coffee from 2000 to 2022, the production and harvested areas are still in the upward trend lines.  Menawhile,  in 2000, the production of World’s coffee beans were just 7.5 million tons with harvested areas of around 10.7 million hectares. In the last 20 years, the highest production of coffee beans occurred in 2014 with the production of around 10.4 million tons and harvested areas of around 10.2 million tons.

Specifically, based on the continent regions, the production of coffee beans is located in some locations. Americas and Asia continent still become the main center of coffee beans production in 2022. Overall, in 2022, the production of coffee beans in America around 5.3 million tons, meanwhile Asia still can produce 3.5 million tons. Furthermore, Africa and Oceania have minor production with an output of coffee beans of around 1.89 million tons and 40 thousand tons, respectively.

In country’s regions, the biggest producers were still dominated by Asia and the Americas Countries. These regions have high production of coffee beans to meet the domestic consumption and some the production is exported to other countries.

1. Brazil

Brazil was the World’s Biggest Coffee Bean Producing-Countries in 2022. According to data from FAO, its production reached 3.1 million tons that year. The southeastern region of Brazil is the center of coffee production. This region spans the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo to Paraná. Most types of coffee species in Brazil are Arabica coffee. In this country, the main harvest of coffee will take place in the summer (dry season) which generally lasts from June to September. Based on coffee growing area, Minas Gerais has an area of 1.22 million hectares, Espírito Santo 433,000 hectares, Sao Paulo 216,000 hectares, Bahia 171,000 hectares, Rondônia 95,000 hectares, and Paraná 49,000 hectares. In this country, the coffee beans prodcution is also used for export needs to several countries such as the United States.


2.  Vietnam

Introduced by the French in 1857, Vietnam is the 2nd largest coffee bean-producing country in the world today. In 2022, its coffee bean production reached 1.9 million tons according to data from FAO. Unlike Brazil, the type of coffee grown in this country is Robusta, which accounts for 97% of the total national coffee bean output. Vietnam’s coffee exports account for 10% of Vietnam’s total exports of agricultural commodities. Vietnam’s total coffee plantation area was around 600,000 hectares (ha). In more detail, the main areas for coffee bean production area in the highlands include Dak Lak Province with an area of 190,000 hectares (ha), Lam Dong of 162,000 hectares, Dak Nong of 135,000 hectares, Gia Lai of 82,000 hectares, and Kon Tum of 13,500 hectares. In this country, the harvest usually takes place from November to December.


3. Indonesia

Since its introduction in the colonial period around the 1600-the 1700s, Indonesia is currently the 3rd largest coffee bean-producing country in the world. According to data from FAO in 2024, coffee bean production reached 794 thousand tons in 2022. According to data from the Directorate General of Plantations of Indonesia, the main area of national coffee production is on the island of Sumatra. South Sumatra Province became the largest contributor of coffee beans with a total production of 193,507 tons, followed by Lampung with 110,597 tons, North Sumatra with 71,023 tons, and Aceh with 70,774 tons. Maybe the Indonesian people know some famous coffees from several regions in Indonesia, namely Aceh Gayo Arabica Coffee, Kintamani Bali Arabica, Toraja Arabica Coffee, Java Arabica Coffee Papua Wamena Coffee, Flores Bajawa Arabica Coffee, Riau Rangsang Meranti Liberika Coffee, Temanggung Robusta Coffee, and several other famous coffee.


4. Columbia

Columbia is the 4th largest producer of coffee beans in the world. According to data from FAO in 2024, coffee production reached 665 thousand tons in 2022. This country has the best coffee production and cultivation areas and was confirmed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site protected by UNESCO, namely The Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia (CCLC) which covers 6 cities in the city of Columbia.

The Colombian coffee bean production area otherwise known as the Coffee Triangle is part of the Paisa region of Colombia in rural Colombia. This region is renowned for being the area for growing and producing most of Colombia’s coffee, which is considered by many around the world to be the best coffee producer in the world. The coffee triangle is divided into four departments: Caldas with the capital Manizales, Quindío with the capital Armenia, Risaralda with the capital Perreira and Tolima with the capital Ibague.


5. Ethiopia

Ethiopia is the 5th largest producer of coffee beans in the world. In 2022, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the country’s coffee bean production reached 496 thousand tons. Most of the types of coffee plants grown in this country are arabica types. Economically, coffee is one of Ethiopia’s mainstay commodities because almost 10% of the country’s export revenue comes from coffee. Many of the country’s coffee export destinations are aimed at European Union countries.

6. Uganda

Uganda is the 7th world’s biggest producer of Coffee beans. In 2022, The national coffee bean production of Uganda reaches 393 thousand tons. In this country, robusta and arabica coffee are spread in different regions. Geographically, robusta coffee grows in the Kampala Forest area and the Lake Victoria Crescent (LVC) meanwhile Arabica coffee grows around the slopes of Mount Elgon. In Uganda, some coffee plants are mixed with perennial crops like cocoa plants (Theobroma cacao). This intercropping system can improve the economic productivity and yield to the farmers.


7. Peru

Peru is the 8th largest producer of coffee beans in the world. In 2022, according to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the country’s coffee bean production reached 352,645 tons. The three main coffee-growing areas are Chanchamayo, Amazonas, San Martin, and St Ignacio. Arabica coffee plants are the most widely grown species in this country with a population reaching about 70% of the total coffee plant population in this country. Economically, a lot of coffee production from this country is exported to other countries, especially countries in the European Union region and only a small portion of coffee production is intended for domestic needs.


8. India

India is the 9th world’s biggest producer of Coffee beans. In 2022, The national coffee bean production of India reaches 338 thousand tons. In This Country, there are some main regions of coffee plantations. These are Karnataka accounting for 71%, followed by Kerala with 21%, and Tamil Nadu (5% of overall production). With the huge production of coffee, India can export its coffee beans to other countries like Germany, Russia, Spain, etc.

9. Honduras

Honduras is the 6th largest coffee bean-producing country in the world. In 2022, the country’s coffee bean production reached 315 thousand tons, according to publications from FAO. There are 6 coffee bean production areas in the country, namely Copán, Opalaca, Montecillos, Comayagua, El Paraiso, Agalta. In this country, the coffee harvest occurs in October-March every year. In this country, coffee is a mainstay commodity for exports and can contribute 3% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).



10.  Central African Republic

Central African Republic still becomes the 10th World largest coffee bean producers in 2022. According to FAO Statistical Corporate Database (FAOSTAT), the production of coffee bean from Central African Republic reached 306,901 tons.
